Speaker terminals are spring-loaded wire clips that operate with a tab. They work adequately, but I’d prefer to see five-way binding posts in a product of this caliber. Wire clips are low-end parts, the kind of thing you’d see on a bargain-basement HTIB. Their presence here reduced the system’s Build Quality rating. Center speakers have dual woofers in the top two packages, with a single woofer in the bottom one. CD sound was less convincing with the HD Theater 500, especially when we played CDs in stereo. The satellites' small size was more evident, so we mostly listened to CDs in Dolby Pro Logic II surround, which filled out the sound a little. The high-resolution surround mix on R.E.M.'s "Green" DVD-A album never really jelled on the HD Theater 500.
We used a Denon AVR-1912 receiver and an Oppo BDP-93 Blu-ray player for all of our HD Theater 500 listening tests.

The build quality of the speaker cabinet feels solid, but the speakers' plastic spring-clip wire connectors look and feel cheap. The spring-clips' grip on the wire doesn't feel secure, so even a moderate tug on the wire may pull the wire out.

Each speaker in this set of Klipsch speakers utilizes an ABS plastic enclosure, except for the subwoofer, which utilizes a vinyl wrapped enclosure. The enclosure type for these Klipsch speakers is a closed system with the subwoofer featuring a bass-reflex via a rear-firing port enclosure. Driver components for the speakers are a 0.75-inch, aluminum dome tweeter and a 2.5-inch, IMG mid-bass driver. All of them share a 0.75-inch aluminum-dome tweeter and 2.5-inch woofer. The HD Theater 1000’s woofers are fiber composite, while the woofers in the other two packages are injection-molded graphite . Subwoofer driver sizes are 10, 8, and 6.5 inches, respectively.
